I am disappointed....and disgruntled to see St. Stephens fall a prey into the hands of what we already are seeing------ the Muslim or Hindu fatalism and fundamentalism outburst of sorts to gain cheap media limelight and be in the headlines. Having studied in christian missionary school and having attained the noble commandments that go well ingrained in my education imbibed through my years in the school, the least I felt ( at seeing the news getting so very dominant that a dear friend had to mail me to have my candid opinion on the subject ) was outraged at the low depths of communalism that this premier Instituion was pushed to by the most unexpected breed of intellectuals.
Agreed that the Institute was established to uphold certain religious beliefs and standards...but the more important amalgamation was the kind of excellence educational centre it had become going beyond caste and creed denominator. The usual serenity in its character had been punctured by those who are taking it on the path tread ed by the Hindu and Muslim fundamentalist elements. It was more of an upbeat, suave, distinct centre of higher learning and a thorough personality development sacrosanct pilgrimage in a person's journey before being painted by the shades of religion on its faculty or on the admission canvass.
Its for the misplaced intelligentsia to place themselves in order and see the reason in denting the reputation it had attained by denying the institute the best of the talent and in helping it bloom with the fragrance of flowers of the secular spectrum. That I at one time got into Chem. Hons. in this institute and considered it a feather in my cap find the spirit being dampened by successive controversies that it had become accustomed to harp on........and in the process digging its own grave of a mediocre, narrow minded, caste ridden and religion dominant madarsa of a KIND.
